Goodreads is one of the most popular apps to help you discover new books, track stories you’ve read, and engage with the reading community online. From rating the books you read to participating in group discussions, here’s how to make the most of Goodreads…

Start From Scratch: Create a Goodreads Account

You can create your own free Goodreads account with a valid email address, or sign in with any of the following accounts:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google
  • Amazon

Sign up directly on the Goodreads website, or download the app first (available on Android and iOS).

Save Now, Read Later

You can scan the barcode of a physical book you want to save in Goodreads, or add a book from any view in Goodreads such as from a review your friend wrote or a book that came up in the Home feed’s recommendations.

Goodreads- Browsing Books
Browse books by genre on Goodreads to discover what’s new!

On the Goodreads website, you can browse by genre, look up an author, or see what your friends are currently reading.

From the “to-read” shelf, you can see what books you’ve saved in Goodreads to read later. This is an easy way to keep track of books you want to read or simply want to remember recommendations given by others.

Lists For Every Reader

You can create lists, contribute to lists, vote on lists… You get the list-gist. The Listopia section offers endless lists for all readers, and you’ll be sure to find something to suit your needs there.

Want a little book-spiration? We recommend the following lists:

If you see something you like, simply click Want to Read next to the book.

Tip: If you’ve already read or are currently reading something on the list but haven’t yet logged it in Goodreads, just click the little down-arrow beside Want to Read and select Currently Reading or Read. Be sure to add a rating, too!

Track Your Progress On the Go

From a mobile device:

  1. Open Goodreads. Tap My Books from the menu at the bottom.
Tip: If you’ve already assigned a book to “Currently Reading” it will be displayed at the top of your My Books page. If not, you can go into the bookshelf where it is saved and locate it there. Tap on the book title then proceed.
  2. Tap Update Progress. You can either enter the actual page number you are on or give a percentage estimate on your progress. Alternately, if you have completed the book simply tap I’ve finished this book! and then provide a rating out of 5 stars.

Look Back at Books You’ve Read

It can be difficult to remember which books you read this year, or even five years ago, and Goodreads acts as a log of everything you’ve read as long as you enter it within the app. If you want to go back and look at what you’ve read, you can sort your list of completed books in many ways including:

  • Date added, started, or read
  • Title
  • Author
  • Average rating
  • Publication year
  • Your rating
  • If you wrote a review

Create a Reading Challenge

Want to set a goal to read 20 books next year? Goodreads hosts annual reading challenges that you can personalize to meet your reading goals.

Add, View, or Edit a Reading Challenge:

From a computer:

  1. Log into Goodreads.
  2. Hover your mouse over the Account icon at the top right, select My Reading Challenge.
  3. From this page you can view the progress of any current challenges set up, quit a challenge, change your challenge, and view your Friends’ Challenges.

From a mobile device:

  2. Tap More in the menu bar at the bottom right, then tap Reading Challenge.
  3. From this page you can view the progress of any current challenges set up, quit a challenge, change your challenge, and view your Friends’ Challenges.

Bonus: Opportunities for Authors and Publishers

The Author Program provides a free platform for authors to promote their books, events, and upcoming book announcements. They can also upload an author profile, participate in group discussions, add trivia about their books, and much more.

Publishers can advertise books directly on Goodreads, gaining access to an audience that is obviously interested in reading!
