You’re using your iPhone when it suddenly freezes or an app crashes. You don’t have to rush to your Genius Bar to have it fixed. Once you learn how to fix common iPhone problems, you’ll feel like you’re your own “genius.”

Frozen Screen

A frozen screen is one of the more common problems. It can be caused by a variety of reasons, but once the screen becomes unresponsive, the best way to fix the issue is to hold down the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button for at least 10 seconds until the phone restarts.

For iPhone 7 and newer, hold both the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button for 10 seconds. If your iPhone has a low charge, you may need to charge it for up to an hour before it’ll restart.

Not Turning On/Off

If your iPhone won’t turn off normally, follow the same process as fixing a frozen screen. An iPhone that won’t turn on is trickier to solve, but not impossible. Start by charging your iPhone. The problem could just be a low battery. If that doesn’t work, you may need a new battery.

Problems With Font Size

A small font isn’t always easy to read. Luckily, you can adjust the font size for many apps that support Dynamic Type, which is available in iOS 7 and later. Fix this common iPhone problem by tapping Settings > General > Text Size or Settings > Display and Brightness > Text Size. Drag the slider to the desired size.

For even larger fonts, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Larger Text. Please note that some apps may still have small fonts.

Can’t Connect to Wi-Fi Automatically

When you’re trying to fix common iPhone problems, you’ll likely run across Wi-Fi connectivity issues. It’s incredibly common, but usually easy to fix. Start by turning Wi-Fi off and back on by going to Settings > Wi-Fi. If you see anything other than a blue checkmark beside your network name, there may be a problem with the network itself.

If you still have trouble connecting, go to Settings and touch the network name. Tap Forget. Restart your phone and rejoin the network. Ensure you choose to store the password and connect automatically in the future.

Apps Crashing

Learning to fix common iPhone problems means you’ll need to know how to handle apps that crash. This can be difficult to fix sometimes because it’s the app’s fault and not your iPhone. The easiest fix is to uninstall and re-install the troublesome app. If that doesn’t work, check the app reviews to see if there is a glitch. An update may be available to fix the problem.

It’s more common than you might think for an iPhone to overheat. This can cause the phone to shut down, restart, or just not function correctly. To fix common iPhone problems like this, you’ll need to reduce your usage. Using resource hungry apps causes the phone to overheat.

You’ll notice battery drain occurs alongside overheating. Shutting down your phone and letting it cool is the best solution. You can also remove apps that use the most battery. Check this by going to Settings > Battery.

You should be able to fix common iPhone problems with just a little troubleshooting, saving you a trip to visit the Apple geniuses.
